2017 MTN 8 Cup Quarter-Finals Betting Preview

The local football season gets going in earnest this weekend with four MTN 8 quarter-final matches and we take a look at each game from a betting perspective.

Bidvest Wits v Golden Arrows – click here to bet

The MTN 8 Cup formed part of a double for Wits last season as they won this and also the PSL Title.  They didn’t have an easy route to the final last season beating Chiefs and Cape Town City before seeing off Sundowns 3-0 in the final.  Wits are 3/1 to defend their Trophy – click here for outright betting.

Arrows fans had to wait till the last match of the season to ensure that they qualified for the MTN 8 and this will be their first appearance in the Cup for 8 years although their fans can point to the fact that they won the competition that year back in 2009.  Arrows are rank outsiders to lift the cup at 25/1.

Bidvest Wits 4/10

Draw 28/10

Golden Arrows 13/2

Suggested bet:  Over 2.5 goals at 17/20.

Wits are always a potent attacking force at home and Arrows have made a couple of interesting signings and can grab a goal.

Cape Town City v Polokwane City click here to bet

Cape Town City were 3rd in the PSL title race last season and they also managed to win the Telkom Cup Trophy.  Manager Eric Tinkler has moved on though and ex-Bafana Bafana striker and SuperSport presenter, Benni McCarthy has taken over at the helm.  Cape Town City bowed out of this competition in the semi-finals last season, losing 3-0 on aggregate to Wits.

Polokwane had a strong finish to last season and ended up finishing in 6th place in the Absa Premiership.  They had nothing else in the way of success to speak of last season and when they visited Cape Town City they lost 2-0.

Cape Town City 5/6

Draw 5/2

Polokwane City 28/10

Suggested Bet:  The draw at 5/2

Polokwane drew more than 50% of their away matches in the League last season and I think the managerial changes at Cape Town City may have a negative impact initially.  I expect a close game and I think the draw is nicely priced.

Kaizer Chiefs v SuperSport United click here to bet

As is often the case these days Kaizer Chiefs play their home match outside of Johannesburg and this game will be played in Durban on Saturday.  Chiefs were very disappointing in the PSL last season only finishing in 4th place but they have shown form in pre-season and did beat Pirates in the recent Black Label Cup.  Chiefs went out in the quarter-final stage last season losing 1-0 away to Cape Town City and they are priced at 3/1 joint second favourites to lift the cup this year.

Eric Tinkler takes over the reins at SuperSport United and he has inherited a team with a strong Cup pedigree as SuperSport won the Nedbank Cup last season and were runners-up in the Telkom Cup.  They finished 5th in the PSL after looking like title contenders early in the season but they continued a poor run in this competition when they bowed out in the quarter-finals.  SuperSport United are trading at 6/1 to lift the Trophy.

These sides have drawn the last 3 matches that they have played in all competitions.

Kaizer Chiefs 11/10

Draw 22/10

SuperSport United 22/10

Suggested bet:  The draw at 22/10.

There is very seldom anything to choose between these teams and at this early stage of the season I expect the trend to continue and make the draw a value bet.

Mamelodi Sundowns v Maritzburg Unitedclick here to bet

The final MTN 8 Cup match of the weekend takes place on Sunday with Mamelodi Sundowns hosting Maritzburg United.

Sundowns had heavy commitments in the continent last season and for that reason they were always a few games behind the other title contenders and while at one point they moved to within a couple of victories of the title, they slipped up in the end and finished as runners-up behind Wits who also beat them in the 2016 MTN 8 final.  Sundowns should go into this season much fresher than in past years and will be eyeing a deep run in a competition that they haven’t won for 10 seasons.

Maritzburg had another successful season finishing 7th and they will be looking to go further than they did last season when they went out to Kaizer Chiefs on penalties in the quarter-finals.

These sides drew both of the matches they played in the League last season.

Mamelodi Sundowns 4/10

Draw 5/2

Maritzburg United 8/1

Suggested bet: Both Team to Score YES at 12/10

Sundowns are very seldom kept scoreless at home and Maritzburg look a decent side capable of getting on the score sheet.
