Platinum Stars v Free State Stars

Platinum Stars eventually finished ninth in the Absa Premiership last season. They won 9, drew 10 and lost 11 of their league matches and never really threatened in the cups. They did finish the campaign strongly to climb towards mid table and in June they have been kept busy in the CAF Confederations Cup group stage where they have found it tough going. Striker Maboke Matlakala has the club joined from Baroka FC and they are seeking more reinforcements ahead of the new season.

Free State Stars finished just 1 point clear of the relegation zone last season, a campaign which saw them win just 6 of 30 league games and 1 win and 2 draws in their last 3 league outings saved them from the drop.  Free State took 4 points from 2 league meetings with Platinum Stars last season, winning 3-1 at home and drawing 1-1 away. Sammy Troughton is the new coach, taking over from Serame Letsoaka.

Bet: Free State Stars 18/10

Free State often show improvement when a new coach first takes over and they get the vote to come out on top.

Kaizer Chiefs v Township Rollers

Chiefs had a disappointing 2016/17 campaign, finishing fourth in the Absa Premiership and failing to land a major trophy. Improvement will be expected and demanded this time around and at the time of writing Chiefs were trading as 7/2 second favourites in the outright betting to land title with Sundowns topping the boards at 2/1. New faces include Bhongolethu Lonwabo Jayiya who impressed with Cape Town City last season and Philani Zulu and Zimbabwean Teenage Hadebe have also signed up.

Township Rollers were the dominant force in the top flight in Botswana last season, topping the log with 19 wins, 9 draws and just 2 defeats to finish 8 points clear of their nearest rivals. The strength of that league in comparison to the PSL has to be taken into account but they are clearly no mugs.

Chiefs should be the stronger side but they might just need this outing and the draw gets a speculative vote and don’t forget our promotion below.
