Cosafa Cup Preview, Friday 7th July

Friday’s action in the Cosafa Cup sees South Africa take on Namibia in the Plate Final and in the Cup Bronze Medal Play Off Tanzania clash with Lesotho with both games taking place at the Moruleng Stadium.

South Africa v Namibia

South Africa would have had high hopes of winning this tournament but they have to be content with a place in the Plate Final. The damage was done in their first outing, a 1-0 defeat to Tanzania where they never recovered from conceding an 18th minute goal. There was some consolation with a 2-0 win over Botswana next time out with the goals coming from Riyaad Norodien (33) and Judas Moseamedi (90).

Namibia played out a 0-0 draw with Lesotho in their opening match but they lost the penalty shoot (5-4). Next time out they edged out Swaziland 1-0 thanks to a second half goal from Roger Katjiteo.

In the 2013 Cosafa Cup play offs South Africa beat Namibia 2-1 and the teams haven’t crossed paths since then.

We have seen some high scoring games in these knockout rounds and there is no reason for either side to hold back here.

Tanzania v Lesotho

Tanzania had to the come through the qualifying group to take their place in the knockout rounds and they did so with an unbeaten record of one win and two draws. Two goals from Yahya Ramadhani gave them a winning start against Malawi and draws with Angola (0-0) and Mauritius (1-1) earned them a prolonged stay in the tournament.  Tanzania went on to shock Bafana in the first round of play offs but their hopes of reaching the final were subsequently dashed when they went down 4-2 to Zambia.

Lesotho’s penalty shoot out win over Nambia put them in contention for a place in the final but they lost a thriller of a semi final to Zimbabwe, going down 4-3 in a game where five goals were scored in the second half after the teams had gone into the break all square at 1-1.
