Currie Cup 2017 Betting Preview, Round 13

341

The penultimate round of Currie Cup action gets underway this weekend and we take a look at all 3 matches and suggest a bet in each.

Cheetahs v Bulls – click here to bet

The Cheetahs are currently 3rd on the log but they continue to be stretched from a resource perspective with their A team playing in the Pro 14.  They found Griquas too strong on the road last week losing by 35 points and in their last home match they beat the Pumas 33-32.

The Bulls need to win here to keep their hopes of a semi-final place alive and they will need to bounce back from a 46-45 defeat at home to Western Province last week.  Their last away match was a 13 point loss to the Sharks in wet conditions and prior to that they lost by 3 points to the Lions in a high scoring encounter in Johannesburg.

These sides met earlier in the season with a much stronger Cheetahs side winning 41-40 at Loftus.

Betting

Cheetahs 4/1

Draw 28/1

Blue Bulls 2/11

Handicap:

Cheetahs +12.5 at 9/10

Blue Bulls -12.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Bulls -12.5 at 9/10.

There has been plenty of money coming for the Bulls this week and I am 100% in agreement.  I cannot see a second string Cheetahs side living with them and I think the Bulls will win this one comfortably.

Pumas v Griquasclick here to bet

The Pumas go into the weekend 5th on the log just a point behind the Lions with 2 matches to play.  They are coming off a bye in Round 12 and prior to that went down by 1 point to the Cheetahs on the road in a high scoring encounter.  Their home form has been excellent though with a 10 point victory over Western Province and they have also beaten the Bulls and Lions this season while pushing the Sharks all the way.

Griquas play their final fixture of the season and they are resigned to the fact that they will not make the playoffs and defeat here would see them finish bottom of the table.  They were too strong for a second string Cheetah side last week, winning 59-24 at home but their most recent away matches saw them lose by 28 to Western Province and by 2 points to the Bulls.

The sides met earlier in the season with the Pumas winning 27-21 in Kimberley.

Betting

Pumas 4/10

Draw 28/1

Griquas 2/1

Handicap

Pumas -9.5 at 9/10

Griquas +9.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet
:  Handicap, Pumas -9.5 at 9/10.

This should be an entertaining high scoring affair but the Pumas home record speaks for itself this season and with more to play for than the Griquas I think they will win this one by a double figure margin.

Golden Lions v Western Provinceclick here to bet

The Lions go into this round 4th on the log on 25 points, 7 points behind their opponents Western Province but just 1 point ahead of the 5th placed Pumas and there is every chance that the 6th placed Bulls may have moved ahead of them by the time this match kicks off.  In short they cannot afford to lose this match and they will need to bounce back from a comprehensive 14 point loss away to the Sharks last week.  The Lions most recent home matches have been narrow victories over the Bulls and Pumas and both games were high scoring affairs.

Western Province got a much needed away victory at Loftus last week winning 46-45 with a penalty in the last minute.  Depending on how the other results go this weekend a victory here may well secure them 2nd spot on the log but should they lose it is not even conceivable that they can miss out on a playoff spot altogether as their final match is away to the Sharks.

Western Province were far too strong for the Lions at Newlands earlier in the season winning 39-3 although it must be said that the Lions were right in that game up until just before half-time.

Betting

Golden Lions 1/1

Draw 22/1

Western Province 9/10

Handicap

Golden Lions +1.5 at 8/10

Western Province -1.5 at 1/1

Suggested bet:  Lions win at 1/1.

I have to agree with the bookmakers that these sides are evenly matched but for me home ground advantage and a sense of desperation will swing it in the Lions favour.
