Currie Cup 2017 Betting Preview, Round 4

The Currie Cup enters unchartered territory this week with 3 midweek games all of which are live and available for punters to bet on.

Griquas v Western Provinceclick here to bet

Griquas were very disappointing in Durban on Friday night losing by 38 points to the Sharks in humid conditions which certainly didn’t suit their style of play.  They had previously come within 5 points of the Lions in Johannesburg and 6 points of the Bulls in Kimberley in 2 very high scoring fixtures.

Western Province started poorly against the Pumas last week and trailed by 2 points at the break and went 9 points down early in the second half.  They came back to win the match by 15 points but that was not enough for those who backed the home team on the handicap which was -18.5 earlier in the week but started closer to the 30 point mark.  This will be Western Province’s 3rd match having lost by 13 points to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein in Round 2.

Western Province won this fixture by 21 points last season.

Griquas 7/2

Draw 28/1

Western Province 2/9

Griquas +10.5 at 9/10

Western Province -10.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Western Province -10.5 at 9/10.

The Griquas are not an easy side to beat at home and they should certainly score their share of tries.  Defensively I think they are going to have problems against a strong Western Province side though and will back the visitors to beat the handicap.

Pumas v Cheetahs – click here to bet

The Pumas return to their home ground where they upset the Lions by 7 points in a high scoring match in Week 1.  They subsequently played two games on the road getting beaten 29-0 by the Sharks in Durban and then last week leading against Western Province at the break before losing 34-19.

The Cheetahs will have the advantage of fresher legs on Wednesday as they had a bye last weekend.  They are currently top of the log with victories over the Sharks and Western Province in Bloemfontein.

These sides met in Nelspruit in 2016 with the Cheetahs running out 52-10 victors.

Pumas 10/1

Draw 40/1

Cheetahs 1/25

Pumas +19.5 at 9/10

Cheetahs -19.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Pumas at +19.5 at 9/10.

The Cheetahs should not have any problems winning this game but the Pumas are a different beast at home and have shown over the years that they are capable of troubling some of the bigger sides.

Bulls v Sharks click here to bet

The Bulls host the Sharks in what is the match of the day and the home team looks set to start narrow favourites.  The Bulls opened their campaign with a 51-45 victory against the Griquas away.  They then had a week off before beating the Lions 54-22 in a convincing performance at Loftus on Saturday.

The Sharks opened their campaign with a loss away to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein but they have showed excellent defensive resolve in their last 2 home games, beating the Pumas 29-0 in Durban and the Griquas 41-3 on Friday night.

The Sharks have won their last 2 Currie Cup matches they have played at Loftus.

Bulls 7/10

Draw 25/1

Lions 12/10

Bulls -3.5 at 9/10

Sharks +3.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Bulls -3.5 points at 9/10.

This should be a cracking match and I fancy the Sharks team will quite enjoy playing in the drier conditions in Pretoria but for my money though this Bull side is starting to transfer into something special and I think they will win this game going away.
