Ecuador take on Argentina in the final round of South America’s qualifying group in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the visitors are in danger of missing out on a place in Russia 2018.
Argentina are in sixth place in a group where the top 4 qualify and the fifth placed nation enters the play offs for next year’s World Cup finals. A win for Argentina here would guarantee a play off place and possibly automatic qualification but despite the talent in the squad they have been hard to catch right.
After 17 rounds of qualifiers Argentina have 6 wins, 7 draws and 4 defeats and even though they have some of the top striking talent in world football they have scored just 16 goals. Last week they drew 0-0 at home to Peru whilst in September they finished all square in Uruguay (0-0) and at home to Venezuela (1-1).
Ecuador are no longer in contention to qualify after a disastrous run of 5 straight defeats. Playing at altitude they can often be a handful for visiting sides and they have won half of their 8 qualifiers in front of their own supporters, drawing 1 and losing 3.
The first meeting in these qualifiers saw Ecuador spring a surprise with a 2-0 win away from home and they have caused plenty of problems for this opposition in recent times.

Bet: Which Team to Score, Argentina only at 23/20
It’s hard to believe how Argentina have got into this desperate situation and they haven’t beaten Ecuador in Quito since 2001. However, Ecuador have been on a terrible run of form and we take Argentina to win and keep a clean sheet.
