The English Premier League is back and we take a look at 4 of the weekend matches from a betting perspective.
Liverpool v Manchester United – click here to bet
The big match of the weekend is the early kick-off on Saturday and pits 7th place Liverpool against 2nd place Manchester United.
Liverpool currently sit 7 points behind United on 12 points from their 7 matches and before the break they drew 1-1 away with Newcastle. This will be their 4th home match and they are yet to taste defeat at Anfield taking 7 points from a possible 9.
United have only dropped 2 points all season and they are only behind Manchester City on goal difference at the top of the table. They beat Crystal Palace 4-0 at home in their last start and they have only dropped 2 points on the road beating Southampton and Swansea and drawing to Stoke.
This fixture finished 0-0 last season and the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Manchester United 18/10
Suggested bet: Manchester United win at 18/10.
United have looked the business this season and Liverpool’s defence has looked suspect when tested. I think the away team can grab 3 points here.
Manchester City v Stoke – click here to bet
Manchester City go into this weekend top of the table on 19 points from their 7 matches and they have won their last 5 games on the trot, most recently beating Chelsea 1-0 away. Their recent home form has been prolific with 5-0 victories over Palace and Liverpool having dropped the only points of the season at home to Everton in their first home match.
Stoke are 13th on the table with 8 points from their 7 matches and they did beat Southampton 2-1 at home before the break to break a 4 match streak without a victory. They have only taken 1 point from 9 on the road.
Stoke managed to hold Manchester City to a 0-0 draw here last season with City winning the reverse fixture 4-1 at Stoke.
Manchester City 1/7
Suggested bet: Over 3.5 goals at 15/20.
Stoke have a better record than most away to Manchester City having won twice here in the last 3 years but in between that City beat them 4-0 and I cannot see them holding a Manchester City side that has looked more impressive than they have in years. I am looking for 4 goals or more in the game, most likely all of them scored by City.
Watford v Arsenal – click here to bet
Saturday’s late kick-off sees 8th placed Watford playing 5th placed Arsenal.
Watford go into the weekend on 12 points from their 7 matches and most recently drew 2-2 away with West Brom. All 3 victories have come on the road though and they have yet to win at home taking just 2 points from 9 starts including a 6-0 hammering against Manchester City.
The Gunners have recovered from a slow start to the season to sit on 13 points, 6 behind the log leaders going into the weekend. They have taken 10 points from a possible 12 in their last 4 fixtures and last time out beat Brighton 2-0 at home. Arsenal are yet to win on the road this season taking just 1 point from 9 on offer and they are still to score a goal away from the Emirates.
Arsenal won this fixture 3-1 last season with Watford winning away 2-1 in the reverse.
Suggested bet: Both teams to score, NO, at 12/10.
This bet looks a bit of value and would have arrived in the last 6 Arsenal League matches.
Southampton v Newcastle United – click here to bet
Our featured Sunday match sees 12th placed Southampton hosting 9th placed Newcastle United.
Southampton are on 8 points from their 7 matches and they have lost 3 of their last 4 games, taking just 3 points from the 12 on offer. They went down 2-1 away to Stoke in their last start and have lost low scoring home games to Manchester United and Watford in their last 2 home starts.
Newcastle sit 2 points above Southampton with 10 points and last time out took a point at home to Liverpool when they drew 1-1. They have lost 2 games and won 1 on the road with all 3 score lines being 1-0 margins.
Southampton won this fixture 3-1 last season and the sides drew 2-2 at Newcastle.
Suggested bet: Southampton win at 17/20.
I took a close look at the exotic markets but while Newcastle’s away form suggests a low scoring game the head-to-head encounters between these sides at Southampton have had goals and perhaps the most glaring stat of all is that Southampton have won the last 4 matches they have hosted against Newcastle and that is where my money is going.
