English Premier League Week 1, Betting Preview

326

The EPL gets going again this weekend and we select 4 matches that look like good betting prospects.

Arsenal v Leicesterclick here to bet

Arsenal were a disappointing 5th on the table last season and they will be looking to get their campaign off to a positive start at home to 2015/2016 Champions Leicester. The Gunners were very strong at home last season and they won their last 5 matches in front of their home fans, scoring 11 goals and conceding just 1 in that time.

Leicester put up a disappointing defence of their title finishing 12th although at one point it looked like they were going to be relegated.  They only picked up 4 points in the last 15 they played for on the road at the end of last season.

Arsenal won this fixture 1-0 last season.

Betting

Arsenal 5/10

Draw 7/2

Leicester 11/2

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Arsenal -1 at 5/4.

Arsenal have an excellent home record against Leicester and I think they will get their campaign off to a comfortable start and to win this bet I need them to win by 2 goals or more.

Watford v Liverpoolclick here to bet

Watford faded badly towards the end of last season and finished in 17th spot, although they were a relatively comfortable 6 points clear of relegation.  They lost their last 2 home matches to Manchester City and Liverpool and only 1 team managed to score in each of Watford’s last 5 home games.

Liverpool finished 4th on the log to qualify for the in to the end of the season, winning their last 4 games away from Anfield in which time they scored 8 goals and conceded just 1.

Liverpool won this fixture 1-0 last season and they were in rampant form when they hosted Watford winning 6-1.

Betting

Watford 5/1

Draw 13/4

Liverpool 6/10

Suggested bet:  Over 2.5 goals at 8/10.

I expect Liverpool to win this fairly comfortably but I do believe that Watford have a goal in them as well and I am looking for 3 goals or more in the game.

Brighton v Manchester City click here to bet

Brighton face a tough entry to the Premier League when they take on last year’s 3rd place finishers, Manchester City, at home in Saturday’s late kick-off.  Brighton were very strong at home in the Championship last season and they only lost 3 matches throughout their campaign and if they are to stand any chance of survival this season they will have to punch above their weight in front of their home fans this season.

City won 3 of their last 6 away matches they played last season and they were in prolific goal scoring form scoring 15 goals in that time and conceding 6.

These sides last met in the Carling Cup back in the 2008/2009 season with Brighton winning on penalties.

Betting

Brighton 10/1

Draw 9/2

Manchester City 3/10

Suggested bet:  Halftime/Fulltime, Man City/Man City at 17/20.

I am expecting Manchester City to hit the ground running this season and I am looking for them to get at least 1 early goal and to kick on and win the match.

Newcastle v Tottenham Hotspurclick here to bet

Our featured game for Sunday sees Newcastle making their return to the English Premier League when they host Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle bounced back to the English Premier League at their first attempt and they only lost 3 times at home all season and won their last 3 home games of the season.  They play a Spurs side that finished runner-up to Chelsea and won 5 of their last 6 matches on the road at the end of last season, scoring 13 goals in their last 2 home games against Hull and Leicester and conceding only 2.

These sides last met in the EPL in the 2015/2016 season with Newcastle winning 5-1 at home and also beating Spurs away by 2-1.

Betting

Newcastle 4/1

Draw 3/1

Spurs 13/20

Suggested bet:  Over 2.5 goals at 8/10.

Newcastle were prolific goal scorers at home last season and they got 10 goals in their last 4 matches and I have already documented Spurs scoring exploits on the road.  I will be disappointed if we don’t get 3 or more goals in this one.
