South Africa v Burkina Faso World Cup Qualifier Preview

South Africa head into Saturday’s World Cup qualifier with Burkina Faso at Soccer City with their hopes of making it to Russia for next years finals looking increasingly remote.

It’s been going wrong on and off the field for Bafana of late. Their last 2 matches in this group both ended in 2-1 defeats to Cape Verde and they will also have to replay an earlier qualifier against Senegal.

As far as the race to qualify for Russia 2018 is concerned the group has been shaken up and the standings now look like this.

Group D

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Burkina Faso 4 1 3 0 5 3 2 6
2 Cape Verde 4 2 0 2 4 6 -2 6
3 Senegal 3 1 2 0 4 2 2 5
4 South Africa 3 0 1 2 3 5 -2 1

It all leaves Bafana with no margin for error in their next 3 matches but there was more bad news for Stuart Baxter on the injury front with skipper Thulani Hlatshwayo ruled out of this game whilst Erick Mathoho is serving a suspension, leaving Baxter with a headache in central defence.

With the Senegal home game now due to be replayed next month Bafana’s only point in the group came in their visit to Burkina Faso 12 months ago when only a late equalizer denied Bafana a victory. Since then Burkina Faso have gone on to draw twice with Senegal and win 2-0 in Cape Verde so they are very handily placed.

Bet: Both teams to score? (yes) at 12/10

Burkina Faso have drawn 3 of their 4 group matches but another point might not be enough to keep them on course for Russia. In what could be an entertaining game in the circumstances, we look for goals, hopefully for both sides.
