Super Rugby Final 2017, Betting Preview

The Lions and the Crusaders meet in the Super Rugby Final at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday and we take a look at the game from a betting perspective.

The Lions have trailed at half-time in both of their playoff matches but on each occasion have come back to win.  Against the Sharks in the quarter-finals they only ended up scraping home by 2 points thanks to a late penalty but despite trailing 22-3 to the Hurricanes at one point last week the Lions ended up winning by a healthy 15 point margin.  They trailed by 12 points at the break but looked by far the stronger side in the second half and once they went ahead of the Hurricanes there only looked like being one winner.

The Crusaders were convincing winners of both of their playoff matches which took place in Christchurch.  In the quarter-final they beat the Highlanders 17-0 in wet conditions and last week against the Chiefs they absorbed early pressure from the visitors before pulling clear to win by 14 points.  The Crusaders will be looking to become the first side to win the Super Rugby Trophy away from home since they did it in the year 2000 against the Brumbies.

These sides met in Johannesburg in the 2016 eliminator with the Lions winning 42-25 to break a run of 7 successive Crusaders victories.

Lions 1/1

Draw 22/1

Crusaders 9/10

Lions +0.5 at 9/10

Crusaders -0.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Lions win at 1/1

The Crusaders have had an exceptional season but the trip to Johannesburg will not be easy and while the Lions may have started their semi-final against the Hurricanes with some doubts in their mind, they will be full of confidence heading into this one and I think they will take advantage of their opponents travels as well as the altitude to lift the cup.
