The Safeway Open 2017, Betting Preview

The North Course at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa Valley, California plays host to this week’s Safeway Open which gets the new PGA Tour season underway.

The North Course is a par 72 layout and will be used as the venue for the 4th successive year. It offers plenty of birdie opportunities and wind can be a factor as can the greens which can be tricky. Good iron play will be key as will a hot putter.

Big hitter Tony Finau heads the betting in what is an understandably weak field given the FedExCup playoffs and the Presidents Cup concluded in the last 2 weeks although it is interesting to see that Phil Mickelson tees it up.

My selections:

Chez Reavie each way at 35/1

He had a very consistent 2016/17 season and also has some decent course form with successive top 25’s. I like his chances in this field.

Chesson Hadley each way at 55/1

He had a great year on the tour and went ok in the occasional start on the PGA Tour. He has the game for this course and I expect him to kick the year off in positive fashion.

Martin Laird each way at 40/1

Has an eye for this course and for golf on the West Coast of the USA in general. T3 here in 2014 and T8 last year shows he likes the course and he also showed a return to form in the playoffs.

Bill Haas each way at 25/1

T20 here in 2016 and I have turned to him as my 4th pick as he is very consistent and played some solid golf towards the back end of last season.
