ATP Madrid, Semi-Finals Preview

We take a look at the two semi-finals taking place in Spain on Saturday and suggest a bet in each game.

Novak Djokovic v Dominic Thiem

Top seed Novak Djokovic was given a walkover in his quarter-final with 9th seed Cilic withdrawing from the match before a ball was hit.  He beat Chardy in straight sets in the Round of 16 and another unseeded player Fritz, also in straight sets, in the Round of 32.

5th seed Thiem had to overcome 4th seed Roger Federer in his quarter-final eventually coming from a set down to win 3-6, 7-6 and 6-4.  He was also given a decent test in his Round of 16 against Fognini winning in 2 tight sets and was one set all with Opelka in the Round of 32 before the unseeded player retired.

These two have met 7 times with Djokovic winning 5 and Thiem 2, but crucially Thiem has won the last 2 meetings both on clay.

Djokovic 8/10

Thiem 19/20

Suggested Bet: Thiem win at 19/20

Thiem won his last Tournament on clay in Barcelona and is now on a 7 match winning streak, as mentioned above he has beaten Djokovic in the last 2 meetings both on clay and I think he can make it 3 in a row.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Rafael Nadal

8th seed Tsitsipas knocked out 3rd seed Zverev 7-5, 3-6 and 6-2 in his quarter-final.  He had seen off unseeded Verdasco in straight sets in the Round of 16 and also beat another unseeded player Mannarino in straight sets in the Round of 32.  Tsitsipas is in good form and is coming off a Tournament win in the Estoril Open where he was the top seed.

2nd seed Rafael Nadal has had a comfortable run through to the semi-finals.  He saw off Wawrinka 6-1, 6-2 in the last 8 and he won his Round of 16 and Round of 32 in straight sets against unseeded opposition.

These two have met 3 times on Tour with Nadal winning on each occasion in straight sets.  Their only meeting in clay was in Barcelona in 2018 where Tsitsipas only managed a total of 3 games.

Tsitsipas 9/2

Nadal 1/7

Suggested Bet:  Handicap, Rafael Nadal -4.5 games at 15/20

Nadal is coming into form nicely ahead of the French Open and while Tsitsipas is playing well he doesn’t look any match for this clay court specialist.
