The Currie Cup regular season draws to a conclusion this weekend with 3 matches and we take a look at the games from a betting angle.
Let’s start with a look at the outright betting where log leaders Western Province are 8/10 to lift the cup with the Golden Lions 5/2, the Sharks 3/1 and you can get 20/1 about the Bulls with the Pumas who are only in with a mathematical chance priced at 150/1 – click here for outright betting.
Pumas v Golden Lions – click here to bet
Friday night sees the Pumas up against the Lions and if the Pumas could pull off a victory they could overtake the Lions and move into the semi-finals. The Lions are currently 4 points ahead of them on the log with a slightly superior points difference so a bonus point would more than likely see the Lions through.
The Pumas last action was a 42-14 away win over the Free State and at home this season they have beaten the Griquas and lost to Western Province. The Lions went down by 16 points away to the Sharks in their last match and the other away game was a narrow win over the Bulls in a high scoring encounter.
Golden Lions 1/5
Pumas +11.5 at 9/10
Golden Lions -11.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Golden Lions (-11.5) at 9/10.
The Lions get the services of some of their returning Boks squad members and as we reach the business end of this competition I am expecting them to improve and have not been particularly impressed with the Pumas this season.

The Griquas are out of playoff contention but are certain of finishing above the Free State who will pick up the wooden spoon. The Griquas last match was a 26 point defeat away at Western Province and at home they have beaten the Cheetahs and run the Bulls close. The Sharks are currently 2nd on the log and could in theory top the log if Western Province would be to be beaten by the Bulls. They lost 50-28 at Newlands two weeks ago and in their other away match they edged a weak Free State side by 4 points in Bloemfontein.
Griquas +13.5 at 9/10
Sharks -13.5 at 9/10
Suggested bet: Handicap, Sharks (-13.5) at 9/10.
I think the Sharks may be value to win the Currie Cup at 3/1 although Western Province are worthy favourites. Despite a large defeat to Western Province last time out, they actually impressed me and that they came back into the game before fading in the last 20 minutes and I think they will have too many guns for Griquas.

The Bulls will most likely be assured of a semi-final spot by the time this game kicks off unless the Pumas pull off something miraculous against the Lions on Friday night. They haven’t played since mid-September when they beat the Pumas 39-29 at Loftus and the other home match this season was a narrow defeat to the Lions.
Western Province have taken a maximum 25 points from their 5 matches and two weeks ago they allowed the Sharks back into the match before drawing clear to win by 22 points. They have been very strong on the road this season, beating the Lions by 27 and the Pumas by 29.
Blue Bulls 3/1
Western Province 1/4
Blue Bulls +10.5 at 9/10
Western Province -10.5 at 9/10
Suggested bet: Handicap, Western Province (-10.5) at 9/10.
This should be an entertaining game and I certainly will be looking at the points lines but as far as the handicap goes, I think Western Province will just pack too many guns for what could be quite a rusty Bulls side.
