The fifth and final test match of India’s tour of England gets underway at the Oval on Friday and England come into the game 3-1 up and assured of a series win.
England clinched the series with a 60 run victory at Southampton last week. It was another pretty low scoring contest and at one stage in the fourth innings India were very much in it but wickets tumbled as 123/3 turned into 180 all out. Moeen Ali took 9 wickets in total and Pujara’s unbeaten 132 in India’s first innings was the best knock of the match.
India needed to win at Southampton to force a decider but it wasn’t to be. They have been competitive although finding consistent support for Virat Kohli has been a big factor in the outcome of the series. England have also had problems in the batting department, especially the top order which is reflected in the series run scoring charts below.
In the build up to this game England’s Alastair Cook announced this will be retiring from international cricket after this test.
Series Top Run Scorers
Virat Kohli 544 runs (8 innings)
Jos Buttler 260 runs (7 innings)
Sam Curran 251 runs (5 innings)
Cheteshwar Pujara 241 runs (6 innings)
Series Top Wicket Takers (all 4 matches)
James Anderson 19
Ishant Sharma 15
Stuart Broad 14
Mohammed Shami 14

Bets: Top Home Batsman – 1st Inns Cook at 4/1
Let’s end the series with a somewhat sentimental call on Cook to top score for England in their first innings. He has been out of form but with the weight now off his shoulders we reckon Cook will want to bow out on a high.
