England v South Africa, Rugby International Preview

England take on South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday and bookmakers have them as narrow favourites.  We take a look at the game from a betting angle.

England’s last test match was a 25-10 victory over the Springboks in South Africa in June, however, they lost that 3 test series 2-1.  They had a disappointing Six Nations campaign losing their final 3 matches to Ireland at home and to France and Scotland on the road and in last year’s November Internationals they beat Argentina, Australia and Samoa.  The England camp has been hit by injuries however they have plenty of depth in all positions.

The Springboks last match was the heart-breaking 32-30 loss to New Zealand at Loftus, a game in which they led right up until the hooter.  They won 4 out of 6 Rugby Championship matches including beating New Zealand on the road, however the other two away games were defeats to Australia and Argentina.

These sides haven’t played at Twickenham since 2016 when England won 37-21 and that broke a run of 5 successive South African victories in London

England 8/10

Draw 25/1

South Africa 11/10

England -1.5 at 9/10

South Africa +1.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Winning margin, South Africa by under 12.5 points at 22/10.

This should be as close a battle as the betting suggests with neither team at full strength, whichever team wins this I expect it to be a close game and in South Africa’s 5 victories over England prior to 2016, this bet would have arrived on 4 occasions.
