France v Argentina, International Rugby Preview

France and Argentina meet in Lille on Saturday and the betting suggests we will have a competitive match.

France lost their 5th consecutive test match when they suffered last minute heart-break to South Africa at home last weekend.  They led 26-22 heading up to the hooter before a string of penalties saw South Africa eventually score from a lineout to win the match.  They previously played 3 test matches in New Zealand in mid-year and while competitive at times they were well beaten in each of them.  They played two matches at home in the Six Nations, beating England and losing to Ireland.

Argentina fought hard before going down by 11 points to Ireland in Dublin last week, a result which was good enough for those that backed them on the handicap of +17.5 points.  It was their 3rd successive defeat having lost to Australia and New Zealand at home in their last 2 Rugby Championship starts.

These sides have not met in France since 2014 when Argentina won 18-13, breaking a run of 3 successive away defeats to the French.  Matches between these sides in France have tended to be tight and low scoring with the odd exception.

France 9/20

Draw 25/1

Argentina 18/10

France -5.5 at 9/10

Argentina +5.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, France (-5.5) at 9/10.

Argentina are certainly an improved side and there seems to be quite a bit of betting support from them but I am expecting France to improve on last week’s showing against the Boks and that should be enough to see them win by 6 points or more.
