Lions v Highlanders, Super Rugby Preview

The Lions will be looking to stay in touch in the South African Conference when they host the Highlanders at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday.  We take a look at the game from a betting angle.

The Lions are currently 26/1 to lift the trophy with the Highlanders the third favourites at just under 10/1.  You can get 7/2 about the Lions winning the South African Conference – click here for outright betting.

The Lions narrowly beat the Waratahs 29-28 in Johannesburg last week.  It came on the back of a tour where they lost to the Brumbies and Crusaders, but beat the Chiefs.  Emirates Airline Park hasn’t been the fortress of old this season although the Lions have won 3 and lost 2 matches and this will be their first home game of the season against New Zealand opposition.  Lions home matches have averaged 60 points each.

The Highlanders have won 3 of their last 4 matches including beating a competitive Jaguares side 32-27 at home last week.  They have won 2 and lost 4 on the road with their last away game a convincing 52-0 win against the Sunwolves.  The Highlanders have a pretty decent record in South Africa having won 3 of their last 4 although they did lose in their last match here by 26 points to the Sharks in Durban last year.  The Lions have won their last 4 home games in a row against the Highlanders all by margins of under 12 points or less.

Lions 9/10

Draw 28/1

Highlanders 1/1

Lions -0.5 at 9/10

Waratahs +0.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Highlanders win at 1/1

As much as I would like the Lions to win this game they just haven’t looked the part this season and I was quite disappointed with their win over the Waratahs where I thought they would beat the handicap of 7.5 points.  They won’t get as many chances against a New Zealand side like the Highlanders and I think the visitors will win this perhaps even with a few points to spare.
