Lions v Rebels, Super Rugby Preview

The Lions will be looking to build momentum when they host the Rebels at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday and we take a look at the game from a betting angle.

The Lions clearly meant business at home to the Jaguares last week and they raced into a big lead before stepping off the gas to allow their opponents to beat the (+9.5) handicap with 3 late tries.  That meant the Lions lost their bonus point, but they did win by 8 points and were never threatened in the match.  They previously lost to the Bulls at home and the Stormers on the road and they will be looking to continue their dominance of Australian sides in Johannesburg where they have won their last 5.

The Rebels have a 100% record after 3 matches and last week they came from behind to beat the Brumbies 29-26 in Melbourne.  They also edged the Highlanders by 5 points at home and beat the Brumbies by 7 in Canberra in Round 1.  They have never won a game in South Africa although they did get a draw against the Sharks in 2017.  Last season they lost to the Bulls by 18 and the Stormers by 16.

The Lions have hosted the Rebels twice, winning by 17 in 2014 and by 5 points in 2012.

Lions 4/10

Draw 25/1

Rebels 22/10

Lions -7.5 at 9/10

Rebels +7.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Lions (-7.5) at 9/10

The Rebels look a much improved side, but they should find the Lions too strong in Johannesburg and as long as the Lions keep their focus for 80 minutes they should win this one comfortably and I make it my handicap play of the weekend.
