The Emirates Lions are back in action this weekend and they host the Waratahs in Johannesburg on Saturday. We take a look at the game from a betting angle.
The Lions are involved in a very tough South African Conference where they are currently 15/4 4th favourites to land the Conference where they currently sit bottom, but only 6 points behind the leaders the Bulls – click here for outright betting markets.
The Lions have been a mixed bag this season, winning 5 and losing 5 and they are coming off a bye having lost to the Crusaders and beaten the Chiefs on the road while also losing to the Brumbies in Canberra. They also have a 50% record at home this season, but last time out, in front of their own fans, they were beaten by 37 points by the Sharks and in their only match against Australian opposition they came back from well down to beat the Rebels 36-33. Lions home games have averaged 61 points this season.
The Waratahs fought hard before losing by 7 points to the Bulls away last week and it was their 2nd successive defeat to South African opposition having lost to the Sharks in Sydney the week before. They are 35/4 to win the Australian Conference and they currently sit 4th, but only 3 points behind the Rebels going into this round of matches. The Waratahs only away win this season came at the Sunwolves and they have lost the other 3 away matches with their away games averaging 51 points each.
The Waratahs have gone 5 games in South Africa without a victory and the Lions won 3 in a row against them in Johannesburg with the last meeting being in the 2018 semi-final, the Lions winning by 18 points.

Lions -7.5 at 9/10
Waratahs +7.5 at 9/10
Suggested bet: Handicap, Lions (-7.5) at 9/10
The Lions haven’t been at their best this season, but they still have a strong side and I think they are going to subdue the Waratahs up front before pulling them away and winning by a 10 to 20 point margin.
