MTN 8 Cup Quarter-Final Preview

The top 8 teams from the PSL last season do battle for the MTN 8 Cup with the quarter-finals taking place this weekend and we take a look at the four matches from a betting angle.

Mamelodi Sundowns v Golden Arrows – click here to bet

Sundowns were beaten 1-0 at home in the quarter-finals by Maritzburg United last season and the year before they went down in the final to Wits.  They have opened their PSL campaign in a confident fashion with a 1-1 home draw to Chiefs and a 2-0 away win at Polokwane in midweek.

Golden Arrows made the top 8 for the second season in a row and in last year’s MTN Cup they were beaten on penalties away to Wits in the quarter-finals.  That was their first appearance in the Cup since 2009 when they went all the way on to win it.

Sundowns has won their last 3 matches against Arrows and have not conceded a goal in that time.

Mamelodi Sundowns 6/10

Draw 28/10

Golden Arrows 5/1

Suggested bet:  The draw at 28/10.

Sundowns are clearly a better side than Arrows but they have had a lot of soccer already this season with the African commitments and I think that Arrows can push them all the way here.

Kaizer Chiefs v Free State Starsclick here to bet

Chiefs have lost in the quarter-finals of the MTN 8 cup for the last two seasons and prior to that they were beaten finalists in the 2015 Cup.  They started the PSL well enough with a 1-1 away draw at Sundowns but were very disappointing in losing 3-1 to Wits in midweek.

Free State Stars have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals in this competition and this will be their first appearance since 2013.  Like Chiefs they have lost badly away to Wits going down 3-0 and in their last start they beat Maritzburg United 2-1 at home.

Stars beat Chiefs 2-0 in the Nedbank Cup last season.

Kaizer Chiefs 17/20

Draw 47/20

Free State Stars 34/10

Suggested bet:  Kaizer Chiefs win at 17/20.

Chiefs didn’t look convincing at Wits but Free State Stars have got a terrible record in this competition and I am backing the Soweto Giants to win this in the 90 minutes.

Orlando Pirates v SuperSport Unitedclick here to bet

Saturday’s final match sees Orlando Pirates at home to SuperSport United and Pirates will be looking to improve on a poor recent record in this competition having not qualified last season and bowing out in the quarter-finals in 2016 and 2015.  They began their PSL campaign with a rather disappointing 1-1 home draw to Highlands but then held on to beat Chippa United 1-0 on the road in the midweek.

SuperSport are the defending MTN 8 Champions having beaten Cape Town City on penalties in the final last year.  They opened their account in the League in midweek with a 1-0 home win over AmaZulu having lost 2-0 away to Cape Town City in their opener.

These sides drew both of their League matches 0-0 last season.

Orlando Pirates 8/10

Draw 47/20

SuperSport United 73/20

Suggested bet:  Pirates win at 8/10.

Pirates are a team which I will be following closely this season as I think they have the ability to go close in the League and run deep in Cup competitions.  I have not been impressed with SuperSport to date and I am looking for a home win here.

Maritzburg United v Cape Town Cityclick here to bet

Sunday’s match sees Maritzburg United at home to Cape Town City.  Maritzburg were beaten 2-0 by SuperSport in the semi-finals last season that loss came at home after they had drawn 1-1 away at SuperSport.  They have got off to a terrible start in the League losing away to Free State Stars and at home to Golden Arrows.

Cape Town City were beaten finalists last season going down to SuperSport United on penalties and the year before that they went down in the semi-finals 3-0 on aggregate to Wits.  They have had a mixed start to their PSL campaign beating SuperSport United 2-0 at home and losing 2-1 away to Baroka in midweek.

Maritzburg and Cape Town City drew 1-1 in Maritzburg last season with Maritzburg United winning the away match 4-2.

Maritzburg United 14/10

Draw 43/20

Cape Town City 2/1

Suggested bet:  The draw at 43/20.

If forced to pick a winner here I have a slight preference for Cape Town City based on the way they have started the season but I think this game is going to be a very tight match and that we are going to see the teams level after 90 minutes.
