PSL Preview, 11 May

The Absa Premier League title race goes down to the final day of the season and we take a look at 3 of the key matches taking place this Saturday and suggest a bet in each.

To start with let’s have a look at the title betting where Sundowns have now firmed to 1/6 favourites ahead of Pirates who are 7/2, courtesy of Pirates dropping points in their last fixture – click here for outright betting.

Chippa United v Kaizer Chiefsclick here to bet

Chippa United sit 13th on the table on 27 points and the bottom of the table is so log jammed it is not inconceivable that they can lose this match and finish last.  They won their last game 3-1 away at Polokwane but they have battled at home this season, winning just 3 out of 14 games and taking just 2 points out of the last 15 they have played for.

Chiefs have had a disappointing season and currently sit 7th without a victory in their last 6 matches.  They have drawn 50% of their away matches this season including 3 of the last 4 and have only won 4 times in 14 road trips.

Suggested Bet:  Chippa United win at 9/4

Chippa United have a good record over Chiefs at home having won their last 2 home PSL matches against them.  They have plenty to play for here and Chiefs just haven’t impressed this season.

Free State Stars v Mamelodi Sundownsclick here to bet

Free State Stars currently sit 14th just 1 position above the relegation playoff spot on goal difference and 1 point above bottom placed Maritzburg United.  They are without a victory in their last 5 starts, drawing 3 and losing 2, but they are undefeated in their last 4 home games with 3 draws and a victory and have won 4 out of 14 home matches this season.

Mamelodi Sundowns have reeled off 4 successive victories and sit top of the table, 2 points ahead of Pirates.  Sundowns have the best away record in the PSL, winning 9 and drawing 4 of their 14 fixtures.  They have won 3 and drawn 1 of their last 4 away games.

Suggested Bet:  Handicap, Free State Stars (+1) the draw at 12/5

Sundowns have a good record against Free State Stars, but the home team will fight hard here.  The visitors have won their last 3 at this ground, but the last 2 have come by 1 goal margins and that is exactly what I expect to happen here.

Orlando Pirates v Polokwaneclick here to bet

Pirates have not lost in their last 9 fixtures, but they no longer have the lead title in their own hands having drawn 2-2 away with Cape Town City in their last start.  They need to win here and hope that Sundowns slip up in their match.  Pirates have only lost once at home all season, but they have drawn 7 of their 14 home games.

Polokwane has had an excellent season and currently sit 5th on the table but they have lost 2 of their last 3 games.  Their away record has been very solid with just 2 defeats in 14 starts and they have drawn 50% of their games on the road.

Pirates won the reverse fixture 2-1 away and that broke a run of 6 successive PSL draws between the sides.

Suggested Bet:  Pirates win at 9/10

Pirates have impressed me this season and they will be kicking themselves for dropping points at Cape Town City.  All they can do is win this match and I expect that they will get 3 Points.
