The IRB World Rugby 7’s Series moves to Singapore this weekend and Fiji will be looking to further close the gap on the United States who currently top the table.
Fiji were tipped on this site last week at 15/10 and they duly delivered an impressive performance beating France 21-7 in the final in Hong Kong. That result moved them 7 points behind the United States who still lead the standings and New Zealand are a further 5 points back. The Blitzbokke are currently languishing in 4th spot a full 31 points behind the USA.
Fiji will be looking to defend their title which they won last year, beating Australia 28-22 in the final. England edged South Africa 26-24 in the Bronze Medal match.
Singapore 7’s betting
New Zealand 67/20
South Africa 19/4
53/1 and better the balance
Let us take a look at this week’s Pools:
Fiji, South Africa, Scotland, Canada
Fiji are 7/20 favourites to win the group ahead of South Africa 2/1 and you can get 40/1 about Scotland. It is hard to see the Blitzbokke turning over Fiji on current form, but this isn’t actually a bad draw for them as they are sure to make the quarters and would avoid Fiji until the final.
Australia, France, Argentina, Hong Kong
This looks a competitive group and Australia are the 13/10 favourites ahead of France 7/4 and Argentina 23/10. France in particular have been improved of late and have contested the last two finals they have played. I think there may be a bit of value in Argentina to win this group at 23/10.
USA, England, Kenya, Wales
USA are 7/10 favourites ahead of the English at 23/20 what bookmakers are seeing as a two horse race, you can get 32/1 Kenya and a 124/1 Wales. I can’t argue with the bookies here and the USA should win this group ahead of England, but the match between them should be tight.
New Zealand, Samoa, Japan, Spain
New Zealand were disappointing in both Vancouver and Hong Kong and they will need to bounce back to form quickly if they are to contest in the overall series. They are 1/5 to win this group ahead of Samoa who have shown improved form of late and have managed to move themselves up to 6th on the log. Samoa are 37/10 and Japan and Spain look no hopers in this group.
Suggested Bet: Fiji win at 13/10
When Fiji run hot they tend to hold form as can be witnessed by back-to-back wins in Cape Town and Hamilton. They looked a cut above the opposition in Hong Kong and I am backing them to close the gap further on the USA.
There will be match betting and in-running betting on each and every game and it is no surprise that 7’s is becoming a favourite of sports punters
