Colombo on Sunday is the last stop for the ODI series between Sri Lanka and South Africa and heading into the fifth and final contest the Proteas are now 3-1 up
In terms of excitement the fourth ODI staged in Pallekele on Wednesday was the most memorable of what had been a one sided series. Sri Lanka’s batsmen came to the party, handling rain interruptions on their way to posting 306/7 in 39 overs. Shanaka top scored with 65 down the order and at the half way stage the home side were firm favourites “in play”.
More rain followed and we ended up with a T20 style chase with the Proteas needing 191 off 21 overs. The South African’s looked to be on course for victory after Amla made 40 but despite having wickets in hand and a required rate which was tumbling down the visitors came up 3 runs short. Heading into the final over only 8 runs were required but the Sri Lankan’s held their nerve.
JP Duminy remains top series bat with 215 runs, 44 ahead of Kusal Perera. Nigidi is top wicket taker with 10 and Dananjaya is next best with 8.
Overall the teams have met 70 times with Sri Lanka winning 30, South Africa 38 with 1 tie and 1 no result.
On Sri Lankan soil 23 meetings have seen the Proteas win 7, losing 15 and no result was possible in the other 1.
