Super Rugby, Lions v Bulls Preview

474

The Lions and the Bulls meet in Johannesburg on Saturday and a win for the home team will ensure they finish top of the South African Conference.

Last year’s beaten finalists, the Lions, are guaranteed to make the playoffs but they will need to win this game if they are to ensure they finish as the top South African team and get a home playoff.  They are currently priced at 12/1 to win the tournament and in this market the Crusaders are dominating at 6/10 with the Hurricanes 9/2, the Chiefs 8/1 and the Waratahs 10/1.

The Lions will have to hope that the Waratahs lose at home to the Brumbies if they are to leapfrog them on the log and increase their chances of a home semi-final. Click here for outright betting.

The Lions were not in action last week but two weeks ago were beaten 31-24 by the Sharks in Durban despite dominating the game for long periods.  The result took the control of the South African conference out of their hands but they were done a favour by the Bulls last week when the Bulls saw off the Jaguares in Pretoria and that means that with a victory here the Lions will ensure they top the South African Conference although even if they lose they will top the Conference if the Sharks beat the Jaguares in Durban.  The Lions have won 5 and lost 2 at home this season with both defeats coming to New Zealand teams.  Games have generally been high scoring and have averaged 63 points with the only exception being the Crusaders match which saw only 22 points scored.

The Bulls were in big trouble early against the Jaguares going down 19-0 before coming back to win an entertaining encounter 43-34.  It broke a run of 3 successive defeats which had ended any hopes they had of playing a role in the business part of this competition.  The Bulls have played 2 South African sides on the road this season, losing to the Stormers by 12 and beating the Sharks by 30 in wet conditions in Durban.

The Bulls and the Lions met in Pretoria in Round 3 with the Lions winning a highly entertaining match 49-35 outscoring the Bulls by 7 tries to 4.  Bulls away matches have averaged 58 points and they have only won 1 and lost 6.
