Super Rugby Preview, Friday 10 May

There are 3 Super Rugby matches taking place on Friday and we take a look at each of them from a betting angle.

The Crusaders remain firm favourites at 6/10 to lift the trophy and the Hurricanes at 9/2 are the only other team trading in single figures – click here for outright betting markets

Blues v Hurricanesclick here to bet

The Blues are 4th on the New Zealand Conference and they have slumped to 3 successive defeats going down by 5 points away to the Brumbies last weekend despite leading early on.  They have won 4 out of 5 home matches this season including a New Zealand Derby against the Highlanders with the only home defeat coming against the Crusaders.

The Hurricanes are 2nd on the New Zealand Conference, 6 points behind the Crusaders and their only 2 defeats this season have come against the Crusaders and they are coming off 4 successive victories.  They have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1 of their 5 away games.  The Hurricanes have an excellent record in Auckland and they have won their last 4 matches here including a 21 point victory in 2018.

Blues +6.5 at 9/10

Hurricanes -6.5 at 9/10

Suggested Bet:  Alternative Winning Margin, Hurricanes by 1-10 points inclusive at 5/2

The Blues are an improved team this year and New Zealand Derbies are often tight affairs, I think the Hurricanes will get up though and I am backing them to win by 10 points or less.

Rebels v Redsclick here to bet

The Rebels continue to top the Australian Conference ahead of the Brumbies and they are currently 17/20 to win the Conference.  They are coming off 3 successive defeats though, the last 2 of which were on the road to the Waratahs and Hurricanes.  They have played 4 times at home, winning 3 and losing 1 with the defeat coming against the Stormers.

The Reds are 3rd on the Australian Conference only 2 points behind the Rebels and they are currently quoted at 23/4 in the Conference.  They are coming off back-to-back victories away at the Sharks and at home to the Sunwolves.  The Reds have won 2 and lost 3 of their away matches with their only match away to Australian opposition an 11 point defeat to the Waratahs.

The Rebels beat the Reds by 45-19 in this fixture last year and they have won 3 of their last 4 home games against the Reds.

Rebels -9.5 at 9/10

Reds +9.5 at 9/10

Suggested Bet:  Handicap, Reds (+9.5) at 9/10

The Rebels haven’t been in as good form as they were earlier in the season and although the Reds were impressive in beating the Sunwolves last week I think they can keep this one tight.

Bulls v Crusadersclick here to bet

The Bulls currently top the South African Conference and they are just shy of 3/1 second favourites behind the Sharks in the Conference betting.  They beat the Waratahs by 7 points in Pretoria last week and they have won 4 and lost 2 of their home games this season.  Their only other home meeting against New Zealand opposition was a 36 point defeat to the Chiefs.

The Crusaders have only lost once this season and that was away to the Waratahs and they have won their last 4 games on the trot.  The Crusaders have an excellent record in South Africa winning 7 of their last 8 matches including beating the Bulls 62-24 in their last meeting in Pretoria in 2017.

Bulls +8.5 at 9/10

Crusaders -8.5 at 9/10

Suggested Bet:  Handicap, Crusaders (-8.5) at 9/10

The Bulls started well against the Waratahs, but were overall quite disappointing despite winning the game and I think this Crusaders side is going to pack too much class and have too much pace for them and will pull clear to win by a double figure margin.
