Super Rugby Preview, Saturday 11 May

We take a look at two of the Super Rugby matches taking place on Saturday and suggest a bet in each.

Highlanders v Jaguaresclick here to bet

The Highlanders are 10/1 third favourites for the competition – click here for outright betting and they currently sit 3rd in the New Zealand Conference, a distant 11 points behind 2nd placed Hurricanes and 17 points behind the Crusaders.  They have won 4 and lost 5 of the 9 matches they have played this season and last week they played out a thrilling 31-31 draw at home to the Chiefs.

The Jaguares are 3/1 third favourites for the South African Conference, having beating the Stormers by 5 points at home last week.  It was their 4th successive victory and they now travel to New Zealand where they won both their matches last season against the Chiefs and the Blues.

These sides have only met once before and that was in Argentina with the Highlanders winning 34-8 in 2016.

Handicap

Highlanders -12.5 at 9/10

Jaguares +12.5 at 9/10

Suggested Bet:  Handicap, Highlanders (-12.5) at 9/10

Jaguares have shown they can travel to New Zealand and are well capable of pushing the Highlanders, but I still think they are lacking in certain key areas and expect the Highlanders to draw clear late.

Chiefs v Sharksclick here to bet

The Chiefs are bottom of the New Zealand Conference after a disappointing season and last week they drew 31-31 away at the Highlanders.  The Chiefs have only won 1 of 5 matches at home this season, drawing 1 and losing 3 and the Lions are the only South African side to beat them away from home since 2010.

The Sharks are currently favourites for the South African Conference, having almost beaten the Crusaders in Christchurch last week where the sides drew 21-21.  The Sharks failed to score a try on the night, but they had started the match 21 point underdogs.  They have only last once in 5 starts on the road this season and while as far as South Africa teams go they have a good record in New Zealand, they have lost their last 4 in a row to the Chiefs away, although 3 of those defeats were by 8 points or less.

Handicap

Chiefs -4.5 at 9/10

Sharks +4.5 at 9/10

Suggested Bet:  Sharks win at 15/10

If the Sharks can reproduce the performance they put in against the Crusaders they should beat a Chiefs side that lost to South African opposition, the Lions, in their last home game.
