Super Rugby Round 5, Saturday Preview

We take a look at 2 of the 3 Super Rugby matches taking place on Saturday and suggest a bet in each game.  The Lions v Rebels match will be covered in its own preview.

Sunwolves v Redsclick here to bet

The Sunwolves return home from their tour of New Zealand where they beat the Chiefs away and lost by 8 points to the Blues last week.  Aside from a heavy defeat in their opening week at home to the Sharks they have beaten all the remaining 3 handicaps with some ease and for the first time since I can recall they will start a match as favourites.

The Reds looked promising in their first match away at the Highlanders going down by 5 points and they then lost by 10 points to the Crusaders in Brisbane before going down by 11 to the Waratahs in Sydney last week.

These sides have met 3 times with the Reds winning in Brisbane twice, but the Sunwolves hammering the Reds 63-28 in Tokyo in 2018, that remains the Sunwolves only win against Australian opposition at home in 8 attempts.

Sunwolves -2.5 at 9/10

Reds +2.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Reds win at 11/10

The Sunwolves have improved but the Reds, despite losing all 3 of their opening matches, look a decent side this year and I am happy to be backing them as the slight underdogs to win this one.

Highlanders v Crusadersclick here to bet

The Highlanders started their campaign strongly with wins against the Chiefs away and the Reds at home, but they then lost to the Rebels on the road and last week went down by 3 points to the Hurricanes in Wellington, losing to a last minute penalty.

The Crusaders have started with 4 successive wins and have firmed them in 15/20 favourites to lift the Cup – click here for outright betting.  They ran in 9 tries last week in beating the Chiefs 57-28 in Christchurch and on the road they have beaten the Reds by 10 and the Blues by 2.

The Highlanders have won 2 of their last 3 at home against the Crusaders and the last 5 head-to-heads in Dunedin have been settled by 12 points or less.

Highlanders +8.5 at 9/10

Crusaders -8.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Winning Margin, Crusaders under 12.5 points at 15/10

It is hard to see the Crusaders getting beaten here but the Highlanders are capable of pushing them and I am looking for a narrow away win, a bet which would have arrived in the Crusaders last 3 victories in Dunedin
