A quality field takes to the tee in this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions Tournament taking place at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China. We take a look at the event from a betting angle.
The Sheshan International Golf Club tends to favour the big hitters and the likes of Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson count amongst the winners in recent years. Plenty of birdies will be needed to win this event although there is some wind forecast for this year so that may keep the scoring down a bit.
Dustin Johnson tops the betting boards at 8/1 ahead of last week’s winner Brooks Koepka, who is also the new World No. 1, and he is priced at 17/2 and you can get 10/1 and better the field.
2017 – Justin Rose -14
2016 – Hideki Matsuyama -23
2015 – Russell Knox -20
2014 – Bubba Watson -11 *
2013 – Dustin Johnson -24
Dustin Johnson 8/1
Brooks Koepka 17/2
Justin Rose 10/1
Rory Mcilroy 10/1
Jason Day 18/1
Tommy Fleetwood 22/1
Hideki Matsuyama 22/1
25/1 and better the balance, prices correct at the time of posting but subject to change
Brooks Koepka each way at 17/2.
Koepka finished runner-up here in 2017 and having shown his form by winning last week, the new World No. 1 is certainly the man to beat here.
Matthew Fitzpatrick each way at 50/1.
Fitzpatrick has solid form at the venue with 2 top 10’s and a top 20 in the last 3 years and is also a recent winner on the European Tour having defended his European Masters a few weeks back.
Cameron Smith each way at 50/1.
Smith has played solid golf in the last couple of weeks and he started slowly last week before storming through the field to finish T7. He showed in the FedEx Cup playoff that he is capable of mixing it with the top names in world golf and looks one to have on side this week.
Matt Wallace each way at 80/1.
Wallace is a player I have backed with some success this season and I don’t think he is that far off from contending in the bigger tournaments. He has solid recent form since winning a couple of months back and he makes his debut at this layout.
