We take a look at the 4 matches taking place in the Varsity Cup later today and suggest a bet in 3 of them.
UWC V CUT – click here to bet
UWC are rooted to the foot of the table in their first season of Varsity Cup having lost all 4 of their matches. Previous home games saw them lose by over 20 points to Shimlas and by a massive 58 points to Tuks last week.
CUT are currently second from bottom of the table with 1 win in their 4 matches and they are coming off a bye. They have played 2 matches in a row, losing by 17 points at Tuks and by 10 points to Wits. This will be these sides first head-to-head meeting in the Varsity Cup.
UWC +5.5 at 9/10
CUT -5.5 a 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Cut (-5.5) at 9/10
UWC have certainly shown some enterprise and have an exciting back line, but their pack just don’t quite appear to be up to Varsity Cup standard and I think that CUT who have troubled some of the bigger teams in patches can win this comfortably.
Maties v UJ – click here to bet
Maties are top of the log with 5 wins in their 5 matches and last week they dominated against Pukke at home, eventually winning 43-15. Their only other home match this season was against Wits in Round 1 where they won by 16 points.
UJ finally got their first victory of the season when they beat Wits 39-16 at home last week, they had lost their previous 4 matches including away games to Ikeys by 19 points and to CUT by a single point.
Last season Maties travelled to Johannesburg to play UJ and beat them 31-3.
Maties -33.5 at 9/10
UJ +33.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: No bet called
It is very rare for me to call a no bet, but while I cannot see past a comfortable Maties victory, I did think that UJ were improved last week and that this handicap looks spot on.
NWU Pukke v UCT Ikeys– click here to bet
NWU currently sit 4th on the table with 3 wins and a loss in their 4 matches. Their first loss came away last week at Maties where they were well beaten 43-15 despite defending heroically in the first half. Their previous home game saw them beat UWC by 16 points.
Ikeys sit 5th on the table with 2 wins in their 4 matches. They played their first match on the road last week going down 51-40 to Shimlas having trailed 44-7 at one point.
Last season Ikeys hosted Pukke and won 18-15.
Pukke -15.5 at 9/10
Ikeys +15.5 at 9/10
Suggested bet: Handicap, Pukke (-15.5) at 9/10
Ikeys victories have come against teams that are struggling and Shimlas stepped off the gas last week and let them keep the score line respectable. I am not sure that Pukke will be as charitable and I am going for a big home win here.
Shimlas v Tuks– click here to bet
Shimlas are 3rd on the table with 3 wins in their 4 starts. This will be their 3rd home game after they disappointingly lost by 13 points to Pukke despite dominating large periods of the match and in last week they let Ikeys back into the game to eventually win 51-40.
They now face Tuks who are second on the table with 4 wins and 1 defeat in their 5 starts. That defeat came at home to Maties and they have a 100% record on the road beating UJ by 21 points and then hammering UWC 70 points to 12 last week.
Last season Tuks hosted Shimlas and it was the men from Bloemfontein who came out victors 19-17.
Shimlas +6.5 at 9/10
Tuks -6.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Tuks (-6.5) at 9/10
Shimlas don’t appear to be a team capable of putting in an 80 minute performance and Tuks are the one team that I can genuinely see giving Maties some sort of a challenge for this title. I am looking for a comfortable away win here.
