Monday Rugby returns to our screen this week with the start of the 2019 Varsity Cup and we take a look at the four matches from a betting angle.
Note: Betting to be added around 13h00 SA time
UJ v NWU Pukke– click here to bet
UJ finished the regular season 3rd in 2018 and they were then well beaten by the Pukke on the road in the semi-final. Overall they won 5 of their 8 matches but scored less tries than any of the other teams that finished in the top 5. Pukke were runners up on the log, finishing 6 points behind UJ who they also beat in the regular season 18-15 at home
UJ +2.5 at 9/10
NWU Pukke -2.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: UJ Win at 15/10
Pukke have lost a lot of their experienced players and UJ look to have some promising youngsters coming into the side.
FNB Ikeys v FNB UWC – click here to bet
Ikeys had a disappointing 2018 season winning 50% of their games and finishing 6th on the log and so missed the play offs. Their matches tended to be low scoring with an average of just over 45 points per game. UWC make their debut in the Varsity Cup having beaten Fort Hare 39-18 in the final of the Varsity Shield. Coached by ex-Springbok, Chester Williams, they will have it all to do as new teams to the Varsity Cup traditionally struggle in their first year.
Ikeys -18.5 at 9/10
UWC +18.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, UCT (-18.5) at 9/10
UWC are capable of competing early but I expect Ikeys to pull clear in the second half.
FNB Tuks v FNB CUT – click here to bet
Tuks will be looking to bounce back from a really disappointing 2018 season where they failed to make the semi-finals and won only 2 of their 8 matches. They have been priced at 6/1 third favourites behind Pukke and Maties to win this year’s Tournament – click here for outright betting. CUT won only 1 of their 8 matches last season and they finished 2nd from bottom on the log ahead of the Madibaz who were relegated. Last season CUT hosted Tuks and Tuks ran away comfortable 54-26 winners in Bloemfontein.
Tuks -20.5 at 9/10
CUT +20.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Tuks (-20.5) at 9/10
Last season would have been a big shock to Tuks and indications are that they will be much stronger this season.
Maties v Wits – click here to bet
Maties topped the table last season, finishing 1 point ahead of Pukke with 6 wins and 2 draws in their 8 matches. They conceded the least tries in the competition, 16 and scored the most with 40. They went on to win the Tournament, beating Pukke 40 points to 7 in the final. They are priced at 14/10 favourites to defend their title. Wits filled the final semi-final spot last year, finishing 4th with 4 wins and a draw in their 8 matches. They were badly beaten by Maties, 65-18 on the road in their semi-final and the sides played to a 30-30 draw at Wits in the regular season.
Maties -20.5 at 9/10
Wits +20.5 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Maties (-20.5) at 9/10
Maties have lost key players but at the same time there is plenty of talent coming through the ranks with no fewer than 3 junior Springboks on the bench, they should be far too strong for Wits.
