We take a look at the four Varsity Cup matches taking place on Monday the 11th of February and suggest a bet in each.
UWC v Shimlas – click here to bet
UWC made a satisfactory debut in the Varsity Cup when they finished within 8 points of Ikeys last week. They had started the game close to 20 point underdogs. Shimlas had a bye last week and so play their first match this season having finished 5th last year with 5 wins in their 8 matches.
UWC +9.5 at 9/10
Shimlas -9.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Shimlas (-9.5) at 9/10
UWC were impressive on debut but Ikeys haven’t been a factor in this tournament for the last couple of years and I think a fresh Shimlas side will come out and win this easily.
UJ v Tuks – click here to bet
UJ were well backed at home last week against Pukke, however they were also well beaten going down 23-8. They will be looking for improvement against a Tuks side that won 23-6 against CUT at home, a result which also saw the underdogs arrive on the handicap. Tuks hosted UJ last year and the sides played to a 30-30 draw.
UJ +7.5 at 9/10
Tuks -7.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Tuks (-7.5) at 9/10
There is certainly room for UJ to improve but I wasn’t impressed with them last week and I suspect that Tuks will get up on the handicap although it won’t be a big bet.
Wits v CUT – click here to bet
Wits went down by 16 points to Maties last week and it was enough to see them beat the handicap. I actually thought that the final score flattered Maties as Wits looked like giving them a really close run at times and I was particularly impressed with the Wits scrum. They now face CUT, who also beat the handicap away at Tuks but only managed to score 6 points going down 23-6. CUT hosted Wits last season and it was the students from Johannesburg who ran out 52-18 winners.
Wits -14.5 at 9/10
CUT +14.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Wits (-14.5) at 9/10
Wits look a well drilled side and I think they can lay down a marker in this tournament with a comfortable win.
UCT Ikeys v Maties – click here to bet
Ikeys got their campaign off to a winning start but a 32-24 victory over UWC was far from convincing. The same could be said for Maties who beat Wits 33-17 but were troubled by the Johannesburg team on numerous occasions. Maties hosted this derby fixture last season winning 33-14 and they are currently 13/10 favourites to win the competition – click here for outright betting
UCT Ikeys +13.5 at 9/10
Maties -13.5 at 9/10
Suggested Bet: Handicap, Maties (-13.5) at 9/10
While Maties didn’t quite fire last week, I saw enough of them to suggest they are worthy title favourites and I think they can beat an Ikeys team that should really have done better against newcomers UWC.
