Varsity Cup Week 3, Betting Preview

Week 3 of the Varsity Cup Rugby takes place on Monday and we take a look at all 4 games and suggest a bet in each.

CUT v Madibaz– click here to bet

CUT are currently bottom of the table after 2 defeats in 2 starts.  They lost by 63 points away to Pukke in Week 1 and they went down by 27 points at UJ last week.

The Madibaz have only played 1 match, having sat out Week 1, and that was a home defeat to Ikeys last week where they went down 17-27.

These sides met in the 2017 Varsity Cup where the Madibaz won 40-14 at home.

CUT 4/1

Draw 33/1

Madibaz 1/6

CUT +16.5 at 9/10

Madibaz -16.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, CUT +16.5 at 9/10.

CUT play their first home game of the season and while I think they are going to battle to win any matches this season they do look capable of running the Madibaz close as the Madibaz themselves were not very impressive last week at home to Ikeys.

Shimlas v Witsclick here to bet

Shimlas are currently 6th on the table after 1 victory and 1 loss in their opening two matches. They started their campaign with a shock 19-17 win away at Tuks but were well beaten by the Maties away last week going down 56-21 in Stellenbosch.  Shimlas will now play their first home game of the season.

Wits are flying high and are currently 2nd on the log with 2 victories in their 2 starts.  They beat Ikeys by 4 points on the road in Week 1 and then at home last week they saw off Tuks by 6 points in a low scoring affair.

Wits and Shimlas met in Round 1 last season with Wits at home and the Shimlas came out winners by 5 points.

Shimlas 6/10

Draw 22/1

Wits 14/10

Shimlas -4.5 at 9/10

Wits +4.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Shimlas -4.5 at 9/10.

Wits have been very impressive so far this season but I think Shimlas on the road are going to be comfortably their toughest task to date.  The Shimlas were outplayed by the Maties last week but they won’t be the only team to suffer that fate this season and I think they can beat Wits by 5 points or more in this game.

Ikeys v Pukkeclick here to bet

Ikeys got their first win of the campaign when they beat the Madibaz by 10 points on the road last week.  They had started as favourites to beat Wits at home in Week 1 but conceded a couple of late tries to lose by 4 points.  Ikeys currently sit 4th on the table.

Pukke opened their campaign with a convincing 70-7 home win over CUT in Week 1 and last week they had their bye and did not play.

Pukke were at home to Ikeys in Round 4 last season and the Ikeys ran them close eventually going down 20-15 to the home team.

Ikeys 33/10

Draw 25/1

Pukke 2/9

Ikeys +10.5 at 9/10

Pukke -10.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Pukke -10.5 at 9/10.

I would not read too much into the Ikeys win over the Madibaz last week as their opposition did not play very well and I think Ikeys could be in for a long and hard season.  Pukke look like perhaps the only side that can challenge Maties this season and I am expecting them to stamp their authority with a big win here.

Maties v Tuksclick here to bet

Maties are flying high at the top of the table after 2 bonus point victories in their opening two weeks.  They were very convincing in their opening encounter away at UJ winning 31-3 in wet conditions and last week they hammered the Shimlas 56-21 at the Danie Craven Stadium.  Maties odds to win the Tournament have been slashed into 6/10 – click here for outright betting.

Tuks were many peoples favourites to win the Tournament at the start of the season but they have lost both their opening fixtures, first going down by 2 points at home to Shimlas and then last week losing 25-19 away at Wits.  You can now get 20/1 on their chances of winning the competition.

Tuks and Maties met twice last season with Tuks winning a low scoring encounter 13-9 at home in Round 1 and the sides met again in the final where Tuks hosted Maties and won by 7 points.

Maties 1/16

Draw 40/1

Tuks 15/2

Maties -22.5 at 9/10

Tuks +22.5 at 9/10

Suggested bet:  Handicap, Tuks +22.5 at 9/10.

This is not a confident call but I am going to assume that Tuks will improve on their opening displays.  They appear to have a fairly decent team but just chose wrong options and have been guilty of making many mistakes.  Maties have the ability to run away with this but 22.5 points is a big handicap and I will have a small bet on the visitors to keep things respectable.
